TAREL
This unique café opened in October 2019, southeast of Nijo Castle. The SHIKIAMI CON CON complex, where it is located, can confidently be called Kyoto's most stylish spot: it's a conglomerate of three traditional nagaya-style houses and almost twenty used railway containers, all compactly arranged on a small site to form an intriguing structure. The café occupies the very first container in the "entrance" area of the complex, while other spaces house various workshops and trendy coworking spots.
The barista and project owner, Mitsumasa Sakamoto, made a bold move right from the start by occupying both specialty niches: here, visitors can enjoy coffee from the renowned Tokyo roaster Switch, as well as natural wines from Kyoto’s finest wine shop, ethelvine. The café has an irregular closing day, so it’s best to check their Instagram for updates. On weekdays, though, it opens at 9:00 am and closes at 8:00 pm, which is great for both those who enjoy their wine early during the day and those who enjoy their coffee late in the evening. In front of the container there’s a small terrace where events are sometimes held, and in warm weather, one can take their drinks outside – a big plus, considering there’s not much seating inside the café proper.
